Durga Saptashati which is also referred to as Devi Mahatmya and Chandi Path is a Hindu religious text describing the victory of the deity Durga over the demon Mahishasura. it is a part of theMarkandeya Purana, written by sage Markandeya.

The text contains Saptashata i.e. 700 verses and because of that the entire composition is thought as Durga Saptashati. The seven hundred verses are organized into thirteen chapters. For ritual reading functions variety of subsidiary texts are appended before and after of 700 verses. A ritualistic reading of Durga Saptashati is a component of the Navratri celebrations within the honor of the deity Durga.

The verses of this story also outline a philosophical foundation wherein the ultimate reality (Brahman in Hinduism) is female. The Devi Mahatmya is commonly graded in some Hindu traditions to be as important as the Bhagavad Gita.
